Moxley Public Health

Jamaican Blue Mountains Community Health Assessment & Improvement Project

Help residents of this community to be heard and have the opportunity to live healthier, happier lives!

about the project

Starting in late 2023, the team at Moxley Public Health collected existing information on over 35 social determinants of health (or community conditions) and health outcomes in this community. Now, with the leadership of community partners, the team is supporting collection of new data on these conditions and health outcomes using a community-wide survey, interviews, and focus groups. Once complete, the next steps will be to analyze the data and validate the information with the community ,to find out their top health priorities (where improvements are most needed and desired) and make recommendations for improvement. More details on the project will be added here and announced on our social media platforms as they become available!

Moxley Public Health is doing this project completely free to this community and paying for it out of company and employee revenues. However, the costs of the project are becoming larger as Moxley Public Health vows to pay people in the community for their time and labor to this project and community members for the information that they provide through the survey, interviews, and focus groups. Additionally, as the project progresses, there will be many more expenses to do the work well and move into the improvement planning and ultimately, the implementation of the strategies and programs used to make improvements.

We are always looking for ways to get the Moxley Public Health community involved in this important initiative

history of the project and how it all began…

Almost 20 years ago, the founder and CEO of Moxley Public Health, Stephanie Moxley, first traveled to the Blue Mountains of Jamaica to complete her internship for Boston University School of Public Health. The astonishing beauty of this area but most of all, the warm and wonderful people that live in this community never left Stephanie’s heart. Throughout the years, Stephanie served this community however she was able and was a board member for an organization that promoted education, health, and job skills in the area.

On a trip to the Blue Mountains to volunteer, Stephanie met Cheryl, another American there on a volunteer trip. Cheryl followed her heart’s calling and moved to this community in Jamaica to be used through helping with children’s programming, providing community meals, home medical visits to people in the area that are isolated to their homes (mostly senior citizens), and so much more. Cheryl and Stephanie became close friends that regularly chatted on the phone. As Cheryl strived to finance her work and bring exposure to this hidden community, it occurred to Stephanie that this area needed the very service that her company, Moxley Public Health, provided to their clients – a community health needs assessment and then a resulting improvement plan! That is when the Blue Mountains Community Health Assessment and Improvement Plan project was born…
